Top 10 questions parents ask about Charis Christian School

The new academic year is around the corner. Here are the answers to the questions parents ask when considering Charis Christian School as the private school of choice for their children.

  1. How does the school incorporate the Christian Ethos?

As believers of the Christian faith, the school management and personnel promote good morals and ethical behaviour. The international ACE curriculum is  bible-based and teaches Godly wisdom, Christian character and Bible scriptures. Each day starts with devotion and prayer. We also have regular praise and worship sessions.

  1. What are some of the character traits taught at the school?

Here are some of the Learners are taught to (be): appreciative; compassionate; confident; consistent; considerate; cooperate; courageous; diligent; discerning; efficient; faithful; fair; forgiving; friendly and generous.

  1. How is the school different to a government school?

One of the most obvious difference is that we do not have one teacher teaching an overcrowded classroom. We have a small number of learners in each class. With the ACE system each child receives his/her own copy of a colour printed A4 study workbook to complete. These books are called ‘PACES’. Each subject has 12 PACES per grade level. Another difference is that the ACE system allows for each child to work independently. Learners have their own workspace cubicles, called ‘offices’. Watch this short video clip (1:13 minutes) to see how the workbooks are used.

  1. How do you provide individual attention to a child?

Each child is supported in person. The learner sets his/her own goals and progress is individually monitored. Teachers facilitate learning and help learners individually. Each teacher has an assistant (known as a monitor) to help with discipline and administration in class.

  1. What is the passing score?

With the ACE system there are no year end examinations. Reviews and ‘check-ups’ are done during the completion of a pace. Progress and assimilation of knowledge is monitored before the test at completion of each pace. The passing score range between 80% to 90% for each PACE pace before continuing to the next pace.

  1. How do you motivate learners?

With a merit and reward system.

  1. What are the school rules and dress code?

The Code of Conduct reflects how the school maintain order and discipline. It also provides information about the playground and class rules, and the uniform and dress code for boys and girls. Please download your copy here: Code of Conduct.

8.  What are the school hours?

School starts at 7:30 for all learners. Monday to Tuesdays: Grade RR & R classes end at 13:00; Grade 1 – 5 ends at 13:30 and Grade 6 and 7 at 14:00. On Friday the school ends at 13:00 for all learners.

9.  What are the sport and extra-curricular activities at the school?

As an active member of the South African Christian schools Sport Association (SACSSA), we offer: athletics; fun athletics; six-a-side Soccer; netball; mini netball; cricket and table tennis. SACSSA is responsible for organizing sport and our teachers are involved in coaching. We encourage participation and good sportsmanship.

Some learners also participate in horse riding; chess; art, music and drama as extra-curricular activities.
